Stained Glass: Topkapi Palace Harem

The stained glass windows in the Aya Sofya are intended to be viewed from a distance in the former church/mosque's cavernous interior. Consequently they are bold in both colour and design. In the Topkapi palace however, the windows are intended to be viewed close up in a setting on the scale of rooms ranging from a large living room to smaller, more intimate rooms used by individuals as bedrooms, for example. As a result, the stained glass windows in the Topkapi Palace is more intricate and exhibits more subtle design details and colour control to garner the desired effects. The themes are different here as well. flowers, birds and more delicate images are used than in the Aya Sofya.
